The difference is that the semi-ridged orthotic allows your foot and all other muscles above to strengthen as your walking while at the same time adding support to the collapsed arch. Hard-ridged orthotics prevent your feet and muscles from strengthening. I use the analogy of a spring to your body's response to the semi-ridged types of orthotics. Your body basically functions like one big "spring", when you take a step and your foot is planted to the ground its like squeezing a spring together, your compressing it and storing "energy". When your foot leaves the ground that's when you're letting go of the spring, it releases the energy and propels your body forward. Hard-ridged orthotics prevent this spring like phenomenon from occurring and keep your body in a weakened state.
